The Conversation
I just finished this painting. It is a scene very familiar in my neck of the woods. There are many inlets with piers and harbors. I don't remember pelicans around while I was growing up. I heard stories about them. Maybe they were blown out by a bad hurricane. Because they seemed to show up after the destruction of the worst I had been through. But they are now back in mass. I saw this group of pelicans fly in one day and they hung around grouped together for a moment. The way they stood together made me smile. I felt I had seen this scene all my life. But it was a group of men meeting on a pier, either coming in or going out. Stopping for a moment to talk about where the fish were biting, or what bait to use. Or it might be a group of women walking into a social meeting, stopping to talk about their children or grandchildren. A scene the could take place anywhere among friends. In trying to think of a title for this piece, it reminded me of a famous work of art from the Harlem Renaissance period by Romare Bearden. The two works are nothing alike in media or style. His is a collage of two rural women in the 1930s. But the feeling is the same. Friends stopping from their busy day to enjoy a moment of sharing their life. So I give you my version of, The Conversation.
